Onze observaties plaatsen we sinds 2009 online. Geniet ervan en stuur de posts door! Onze stukken verschijnen o.a. in Glamour.

Why are female managers so controlling?

I am trying to reach the top. And on my way I encounter many females on the same journey. Some of them are a step ahead of me and are already managing a department or team. In my relatively short career I have had two female managers. Both of them were control freaks.

7:36am

Hi, could you make sure you’ll send me your to-do list for today?
Sure, I’ll send it to you by e-mail.

8:00am
Until what time are you planning to work?
Just a normal day, why?

8:30am
Just making sure we are on the same page here, people have different ideas on ‘working from home’.
OK, I’ll send you a message when I plan on closing off.

9:10am
Not necessary, I am not your nanny!

She would review my work and ask me to make all sorts of changes. After the changes, she would review my work again and would change her own changes. This could go on for days on end, slowing me down on my way to the top. Everyday she would ask me to come up with to-do lists, which she ticked off at the end of the day.

Both my female managers had a burn out and they both blamed the company and the people they worked with.

I wonder if this is how they have always been, or if it's something that just happens if you put a woman in a management position, a bit like a werewolf who can’t help turning into a monster with a full moon. Some female manager just can’t help themselves turning into angry control freaks when that top-position is in sight.

Maybe reaching the top isn’t that joyful after all.
