Onze observaties plaatsen we sinds 2009 online. Geniet ervan en stuur de posts door! Onze stukken verschijnen o.a. in Glamour.

Being a Night Owl Rocks (Until Tuesday)

Being an evening person is not an advantage in a traditional corporate environment. Actually, it is not an advantage in any corporate environment.
The only business I can think of where it would be an advantage is a bar or a casino. Besides that, I can’t think of any company that would encourage its employees to sleep in and start after 10am. Most companies encourage their employees to start before 9am, which is a nightmare for me.

An early bird is considered to be more effective and energetic, while a slow starter is discriminated against. So yes, as a night person I feel discriminated against for having night owl genes. I have read it is genetically predetermined that a person is either a morning or an evening person. So I just can’t help myself.

Every morning is a struggle for me. I snooze ten times before actually getting up. My boyfriend’s credo, "If you snooze, you lose," gets me grumpier by the minute.
After three espressos I start waking up and am able to think. In the evenings - after work hours - I come alive, but just for a short while, because my sense of responsibility dictates me to go to bed on time, or else even ten espressos will not get me through the morning. So I underperform during the day. I have less effective and energetic hours in my day than a morning person and I am fed up with it.

My weekends, on the other hand, are filled with night adventures, and I can easily stay awake until early morning (and as all night owls know, that is when the fun begins).

In comparison to my colleagues, who are all morning persons, my weekends are so much more fun and exciting that every Monday I feel sorry for them. On Monday I know being a night owl rocks. Unfortunately there is always the inevitable Tuesday.
